How is the Cyberday data backed up?

The data in Cyberday is backed up in two different ways. Backups are kept in the same region (EU) as the database, but in physically separate locations.
Back

The data in Cyberday is backed up with two separate backup processes.

Continuous backups for point-in-time restoration

The database and all changes made to its content are continuously and automatically replicated for the last seven (7) days.

This backup process ensures the database can be cloned and restored to any point in time from this time interval if needed.

Automated daily backups for longer term backups

In addition to the database replication, daily backups are automatically taken from the database. Daily backups are also selectively available for a lot further into the past (up to 12 months), than the continuous backups.

This backup process ensures that data can be restored to a previous point in time or data can be selectively retrieved from older daily backup. The latter situation may be necessary, for example, if the user has accidentally deleted data and does not notice this immediately.

Additional security measures related to backups

Separate backup vault for backup storage

Cyberday backups are stored in a backup vault, which is separated from other database and infrastructure management. This measure is in place to ensure backups are better protected e.g. against admin account takeover attacks.

Backup geo-distribution for automated backups

Cyberday backups are by default kept in the same region (EU) as the main database, but in physically separate locations. A separate backup copy is also always geo-replicated to be stored in a separate subregion inside the same main region, to improve the availability of backups even further.
